Bible verses for protection at night
The verse most people pray for protection at night is Psalm 4:8: In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, LORD, alone, make me live in safety.
Psalm 91 and Psalm 121 are the two protection psalms, prayed before sleep for centuries. Below are eight passages in full, a short prayer for your household, one to say with a child, and an honest word on what prayer is and is not when the danger is real.
Psalm 91:1
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
The protection psalm begins with where you live, not with what you fear. Later it promises that no plague will
come near your dwelling
, which is why so many people pray it as they walk through a dark house checking the doors.Psalm 121
1I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. 3He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5The LORD is your keeper. The LORD is your shade on your right hand. 6The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. 7The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.
A Song of Ascents, traditionally sung by pilgrims climbing to Jerusalem. The word keep runs through it again and again. Whoever is awake in your house tonight, one keeper is awake with them, and he does not take a turn at sleeping.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, LORD, alone, make me live in safety.
The bedtime verse of the evening psalm. Notice the word alone: safety here does not rest on the locks, though you should still use them. It is the verse to say last, with the light already off.
Psalm 3:5
I laid myself down and slept. I awakened, for the LORD sustains me.
Written, by its heading, when David fled from his son Absalom. He slept in the open with real enemies near and woke up still held. A verse for nights when the threat is not imagined.
Proverbs 3:24
When you lie down, you will not be afraid. Yes, you will lie down, and your sleep will be sweet.
A father’s promise to a child who keeps wisdom close. Two verses later the father gives the reason: the LORD himself is the one to lean on. Good for a child who checks under the bed, and for the adult who checks the stove twice.
Psalm 27:1
The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?
The LORD is light in the very first line, which makes it a natural verse for switching off the lamp. Its two questions are asked so the answer can be said out loud: no one.
Deuteronomy 33:27
The eternal God is your dwelling place. Underneath are the everlasting arms.
From the blessing Moses spoke over the tribes of Israel near the end of his life. The house you sleep in is not your first shelter. Under the bed, under the floor, under everything, there are arms.
Isaiah 41:10
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
Spoken to Israel in exile, far from home and afraid. Five promises in one verse: presence, belonging, strength, help, and a hand that holds you up. For the parent lying awake listening to every sound in the house.
A protection prayer before sleep
This is a prayer of our own, not Scripture. Say it as you lock the door or turn out the last light, and change any word that does not fit your house.
Lord, the day is done and the doors are shut. I have done what I can to keep this house, and now I give it to you. Watch over every room and every person sleeping in it. Keep us from harm, from fear, and from anything that would come in the dark. Where I cannot see, you see. Where I cannot guard, you keep. Let us lie down in peace and wake in your care. Amen.
A protection prayer to say with a child
Say a line, let your child say it back, then a hug and the light.
Dear God, thank you for my bed and my blanket. Thank you that you never fall asleep. Please keep me safe tonight, and Mom and Dad, and everyone in our house. When it is dark, you are still here. Amen.
Change Mom and Dad to the names your child uses. For a fuller set, the kids bedtime prayers page has more, written for small voices.
How to pray for your household by name
Praying protection over a home is old practice. The church’s traditional night prayer, Compline, has long included a prayer asking God to visit this house, keep its enemies far off and let it rest in peace.
- Walk the house once as you lock up. At each bedroom door, say the name of the person asleep behind it.
- For each name, ask one thing: safety, rest, or help with what they carried today.
- Name the ones not under your roof tonight: a grown child, a parent on their own, someone working a night shift.
- In your own bed, pray Psalm 4:8 for yourself, with the word I.
- End by blessing the whole house with the words below, the blessing God gave Aaron to speak over Israel.
24‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’
You can say the blessing over a sleeping child with a hand on their head, or over a whole house from the hallway. Put a name in after the first line if you like: The LORD bless you, and keep you
, then the name.
Prayers of trust, not charms
These verses are not a lock or a spell, and saying them does not make a house safe by itself. They are words of trust spoken to someone who keeps watch. When Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem under threat, the builders prayed and also set a guard day and night. Faith did both, and so can you.
So lock the door. Check the smoke alarm. If you hear someone trying to get in, or anyone in the house is in danger, call for help first and pray on the way. In an emergency, call your local emergency number (911 in the US). If the person you fear lives in your home, you do not have to carry that alone: in the US, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233.
And if the fear itself, not any real danger, keeps you awake most nights for weeks, please talk to a doctor. That is not a lack of faith. If your fear comes in dreams rather than in the dark house, the bad dreams page is written for that night.
