Bible verses for 3 a.m.
At 3 a.m., read one short verse and let it be enough. Psalm 63:6 was written for this hour: when I remember you on my bed, and think about you in the night watches.
Psalm 139 says that to God the night shines as the day.
Psalm 121 says your keeper does not sleep. Waking in the night is common, and you do not have to decode it.
Psalm 119:148
My eyes stay open through the night watches, that I might meditate on your word.
The psalmist is awake too, and he spends the open eyes on God’s word. You can do the same with one line.
Psalm 63:6-8
6when I remember you on my bed, and think about you in the night watches. 7For you have been my help. I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings. 8My soul stays close to you. Your right hand holds me up.
The heading sets this psalm in the wilderness of Judah. A hard place. Still, on his bed, in the watches of the night, he remembers. And he finds a hand holding him up.
Psalm 139:11-12
11If I say, Surely the darkness will overwhelm me; the light around me will be night, 12even the darkness doesn’t hide from you, but the night shines as the day. The darkness is like light to you.
For when the dark feels heavy. God sees what you cannot, and the darkness that covers you does not cover you from him.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, LORD, alone, make me live in safety.
For lying back down. Say the first half slowly. Then the second. You are not on watch tonight.
Psalm 121
1I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. 3He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5The LORD is your keeper. The LORD is your shade on your right hand. 6The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. 7The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.
A song for travellers. Read it slowly. Count how many times it says keep. The one who keeps you is awake, so you do not have to be.
Psalm 42:8
The LORD will command his loving kindness in the daytime. In the night his song shall be with me: a prayer to the God of my life.
Written by someone downcast and far from the house of God. Even so: a song in the night. Let it be a quiet one. Hummed, or only thought.
If you are awake now
- Leave the clock alone. You do not need the time to rest.
- Keep the light low. If you must use your phone, turn it all the way down.
- Read one verse above, only one, and read it twice.
- Breathe out slowly, longer out than in, four or five times.
- If you are still wide awake after a while, get up. Sit somewhere dim. Come back when you feel sleepy.
- In the morning, get up at your usual time. Tomorrow night will be kinder for it.
If you would rather not hold a bright phone, the quiet room keeps one verse on a dark screen, with real recorded rain or silence.
Waking in the night is common
Most people wake briefly in the night. Many never remember it. Older adults wake more often, and that is a normal change with age.
A waking in the night is ordinary and means nothing on its own. Worry about the waking is often what keeps you up.
The Bible speaks of the night in watches. In Old Testament times the night was split into three of them, the hours a guard stayed awake while others slept. To be awake in a watch is old and ordinary. The psalms were prayed in those hours.
A drink in the evening can bring waking in the second half of the night, as the body clears it. That is worth knowing, and worth testing.
When it is every night
Some patterns deserve a doctor. Waking very early every morning, with low mood or no interest in things you used to enjoy. Waking gasping or choking. Being so sleepy in the day it is unsafe to drive. Sleep trouble most nights for three months or more.
